I bought myself this perfect sweater today and a new leather bag. I'm thinking about posting pictures tomorrow. Right now I'm still on a hunt for new Dr. Martens boots, dark red ones if you please. I think they call them cherry red. They look like this:

My previous pair I bought at this market in Amsterdam. Today I went there again, but the Dr. Martens sellers were nowhere to be found :(( So now I'm putting my money on eBay

Something I didn't expect was that the photography workshop I'm doing at the moment would make me look at pictures differently. I thought I already noticed every important detail that adds so much to the final product, but I was wrong. The pictures of Fergus Padel make me realize that even more. The depth of field that you add to your photos can be such a strong factor when making ordinary objects or settings look extraordinary. That's why, for example, I loved the cinematography in Andrea Arnold's film Fish Tank, because it constantly went in and out of focus, thus playing with the depth of field that adds so much to a picture. It made me realize why this one picture that I took in Paris kept surprising me everytime I look at it, because the objects photographed, the setting, at a first glance, all of that doesn't look that special. But looking at it now with I guess a somewhat fresh perspective, I see now that the depth of field is what makes this picture stand out and lifts the ordinary to an artistic and aesthetic level.

That picture from Paris...


On Sunday my polaroid camera died or, hopefully, it's in some kind of coma. I'll try to buy some new film soon and see if it works when I replace the old film with a new one. Else I'll be searching eBay for a new camera. The dissapointment was immense though. I was so ready that morning to take a picture. The light was formidable.

PS - Fernando Eimbcke I adore you! Your movies are a huge inspiration. Thanks. Still can't believe I found Temporada De Patos for only 3 euros yesterday (!) It's ideal for me, but the movie deserves way more money than that actually. Oh well.

A huge advantage of going to Art school even if it's only every Saturday, is that you get to hang around people who are basically like you. Last week we went on an excursion and two girls from my group happened to expand my vocabulary by telling me all about this little wonder called the lomography camera. They are analog not digital and they come in different versions. I just bought mine via eBay which is a four lens camera meaning that it takes four pictures at the same time all in one photo. It's a bit hard to explain but hopefully I'll be able to show some lomography pictures I took very soon. Here's a picture of what it looks like:


I'm leaving in a couple of minutes to watch a movie at the Leids Film Festival and get my pass and T-shirt 'cause I'll be volunteering this weekend. Also, I might have this internship thingy coming up which if I manage to get it, will be a pretty big deal. So fingers crossed! :DDD

&_ACROSS THE UNIVERSE§!

When I first saw its trailer it immediately skyrocketed to the top of my must-see list. Now, finally, after buying the DVD on eBay and having listened to the soundtrack many times already, I saw the accompanying visuals. For everyone who doesn't know, Across The Universe is a film which story derives from songs by The Beatles, those songs being featured in the film thus with the characters singing. So yes, it's a musical, but a much cooler one because The Beatles are cool and I love their songs and the actors who sing them in this film do so very well. I love Jim Sturgess's voice who plays Jude (of course) and Evan Rachel Wood who plays (again, of course) Lucy. People should stop bashing her for having dated Marilyn Manson and trying to copy Dita Von Teese, the girl's very talented which should be the focus, not her personal life. It has to be said that the film does lose momentum, but overall it's really fun. It's one of those films that make you think, wow, I wish I could have been part of this film, filming it seemed to have been such a nice experience. Julie Taymor who did Frida and Titus makes for a visual feast with great looking colourful sets. Sometimes the film looks more like an art installation. It's a really cool film and what's very important is that the two main characters have chemistry and I think they really do. They make for a very believable couple and at the end I found myself really caring for them, which was a bit cheesy of me. :)

One of my favourite scenes takes place at a bowling alley. Love it when they jump and run near the end:
